What is this?

Betty Fedora is a feminist (yes, we went there) crime fiction magazine. We aim to publish short stories, essays, book reviews, and insights about the crime fiction genre through a woman-focused lens. What is feminist crime fiction? Like the Supreme Court on pornography, we know it when we see it. But more specifically, it can be gritty or funny or sexy or experimental but above all, it features complex women in roles beyond the standard tropes of the genre–you know, like victim, bimbo, bitchy boss, generic love interest, femme fatale, or cutesy dilettante.

Have you heard of the Bechdel Test? Does a story have two women, with names, who talk to each other, about something other than a man? Sounds simple, but a shocking number of books and films fail to meet such a low standard. The test is an imperfect indicator, but chances are, if a piece passes, it’s something Betty Fedora would like to read. Like the word “feminism” itself, there are no rules here. We just want to read about kickass women, and we hope you will too.
